Industrial sector, utilities and Smart Factories manufacturing

Many sectors have been influenced by the wearable technology and Internet of Things (IoT), one of them is the Industrial sector, manufacturing and production of goods and components. Moreover, in industries with maintenance and manufacturing tasks of high risk – such as the mining, oil and gas – the wearables can play a key role in security.

But do we really know the real applications that we can give? We give you some key tasks that can help improve the production, efficiency and security:

Integration with machinery and industrial robots

Working with Smart Glasses as hands-free and accessible information in real time about robots and production line machinery, can return great benefits:
  • Machinery display indicators:
    •     – Production line status: Availability, Average power consumption, change of components, the latest dates and next revision.
    •     – Ongoing process indicators: remaining time, product reference, exit date, incidents, and so on.
  • – Receive alarms and integrated alerts from robotics and machinery.
  • – Interaction with robotics and machinery (start/stop and other commands).
  • – Access to supporting documents (videos, photos, manuals, etc) in the resolution of incidents and work on industrial machinery.
  • – Identification by machinery scanning and auxiliary elements.

Workers’ Safety

The possibility of using bracelets or smart watches for monitoring workers’ biometrics, allowing us to reduce occupational accidents. When a worker is going to perform a task that comes with risks, by using devices such as Apple Watch or Android Wear, he/she will measure parameters such as the temperature, falls or low or high blood pressure outside of marked limits, among others, once collected by wearable device it will indicate an alert. In case of deactivation not done by its owner, it will activate a security protocol by means of an alert to the main hub that could result in a call, a mobile message (SMS), email and directly accessing its position thanks to the watch ‘s GPS.

Training process

Whether a new worker starts a new task or incorporates new machinery, the Smart Glasses can drastically reduce the learning time. While the technician has both hands free, he/she can see the tasks’ process to perform step by step inside the glasses.
Or if we find a new incident, the technician could document through photographs and videos, they can then be stored and used in the future by another worker.
Also it can receive support remotely, because Smart Glasses are a live streaming, so that one person or a team of experts can advise and validate the procedures used by the technician on site, in real time.

Maintenance and incident management

The video-based collaboration in real time means that a worker can request and receive training of its colleagues through videoconferences in order to help solve problems without travelling. Moreover, it allows the following:
  • – Communication between operators: Establishing a system of communication between operators that are covering the same incident, from which they can share messages, photographs or videos.
  • – GPS indications: through the geolocalization system that Smart Glasses have, the operator can pinpoint the place of the incident.
  • – Monitoring the procedures: to resolve the incident step by step, monitoring patterns which are supported by videos, diagrams and images.
